Blogger's Notes:
First of all, thanks for bs angel for gathering the gaming community in all the ways she does. Monthly blogging adventures sound like fun and don't take up too much time. Thinking about content however... that's always been a problem. On with the article!

Thinking out of the box has always been a plus for me. Thinking as far back as I can remember, one old-school gaming moment that sticks out as a real WOW moment involves X-Men for the Sega Genesis. I'll probably replay it after I post this and edit as necessary but at the end of Mojo's Crunch (funny how I can remember the level name (thanks to the included poster with walkthroughs) as opposed to the actually level number), the walkthrough on the poster ends right after you kill Mojo and then you're not told what to do.

At the end of the level, you're supposed to destroy the virus that's been infecting the Danger Room then reboot the system to clean the Danger Room's computers. So, you "kill" the virus which is a fuzzy computer console floating in the air. Then, reboot the system. You don't know how long it took me to figure out what was going on. I forget how old I was (I could do the calculations but then that would date me though my age is nothing to be embarrassed about) but I kept on trying to figure out what to do. There was a limited amount of time to pass the level as well so I'd end up dying once the timer ran out then turn off the Genesis then leave it alone for a while, try again and same deal... until I got sick of waiting for the timer to stop to kill me so I hit the reset button on the Genesis.

What do you know, a whole bunch of 1's and 0's flood the screen and the Danger Room computers "rebooted".

I was like, WHOA. That was thinking out of the box for back in the day - to hit the reset button to advance in the game. That's new. That's clever. I played that level so many times after I figured it out because it was pure genius. Moving a little further down the game time line, more experiences like that happened with the Metal Gear Solid series, and also that one internet puzzle game that I can't remember the name of... but things that make you think outside of the usual box turn me on.

For the more recent "Ooh and Ahh" moment, you'd probably think I'd say Portal because of the fact that it just dismantles the box. Yes, I would've done Portal except a few days ago, I experienced a fine moment of excellent teamwork while playing Team Fortress 2.

Readers Digest version would be that I got the Impossible Defense achievement where your team must successfully defend Gravel Pit without giving up a capture. There were 5 or so of us on team chat and actually using it the way it was supposed to be used. That was, honestly, the first time I've ever been part of a vocally commanded plan that was orchestrated well and I hope it happens more often. Everyone's too ...I dunno... trash-talky or shy to actually plan stuff out. I'm more on the shy side. But yeah, defending Gravel Pit is pretty intense with a good team. It could've been that the opposing team just sucked, but still, it felt awesome. People using what's available in the way it's supposed to be used to make the gaming experience better for everyone... that doesn't happen too often, eh?

Oh look, I can post a comment now! :)

I didn't play the first game you referred to but I can say with confidence I never would have figured out to hit the reset button, no matter how long I spent on it. Did they have strategy guides back then? That is the only way I would progressed.

And successfully pulling off an orchestrated strategy as a team is one of the best things about multiplayer gaming in my opinion. It just doesn't get much better than that. :)

Yeah, it's all about using the mic for more than just swearing.

Having an organised team, supporting your team mates and finding a strategy to victory is what it's all about. :)

lol, it's been too long since then and I don't remember if there were strategy guides out yet. I knew cheat books were... probably Tips and Tricks magazine was circulating around that time... oh dear. flashbacks!

I've never really used strategy guides for anything other than rpgs and the occasional survival horror...

everything else, i just look up on gamefaqs.

speaking of survival horror and gamefaqs, I loved reading the Silent Hill plot guides and analysis'

silent hill messes you up.

I myself am kinda quiet when it comes to talking. Ill speak up when I see/get killed by someone. But in those rare moments when everyone is working 100% together... there is no greater feeling!

To reboot your system to progress is the most insane idea ive heard of. I would have never even thought that my console could be used in that way.
